The very first tournament organized by Abseitz in 1996 was consisted only of a volleyball competition. It has not yet been called "Wild Wild South" but simply "Volleyball B+C Turnier". Only three years after the establishment of Abseitz a total of twelve teams from all over Germany, Switzerland and Austria came together in Stuttgart.
Back then it was almost exclusively a men-only event - apart from two women the teams consisted entirely of men.
